How to Change Your Address

Moving to a new home involves a lot of planning, and one crucial step is updating your address. Whether you’re relocating within Detroit or leaving the area, keeping your address current with key organizations prevents missed bills, lost mail, and service disruptions. As a trusted Detroit property management company, Grant & Main is here to guide you through the process.

Update Your Address with USPS

Start by updating your address with the United States Postal Service (USPS). You can do this online at www.usps.com or by visiting a local post office. USPS offers mail forwarding for up to a year, allowing you time to update your address with businesses and service providers.

Notify Your Landlord or Property Manager

If you’re renting, inform your landlord about your move. This step is essential to ensure a smooth transition into a Grant & Main property and to receive your security deposit refund (if applicable).

Update Your Utility Accounts

Don’t forget to transfer or close accounts with your utility providers:

  • Electricity & Gas: Contact DTE Energy to update your address or close your account.
  • Water & Sewer: Notify the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) of your new address.
  • Internet & Cable: Inform providers such as Comcast Xfinity or AT&T to ensure uninterrupted service.

Update Financial and Subscription Services

Make sure to update your new address with:

  • Banks and credit card companies
  • Insurance providers
  • Streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, etc.)
  • Online retailers (Amazon, Walmart, etc.)

These updates prevent billing issues and ensure deliveries reach your new home.

Update Your Driver’s License and Voter Registration

Michigan law requires you to update your address on your driver’s license within 30 days of moving. You can do this online or at a Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) office. Updating your address will also automatically update your voter registration.

Inform Your Employer and Healthcare Providers

Your employer needs your new address for payroll and tax purposes. Also, notify your doctor, dentist, pharmacy, and health insurance provider to ensure you receive important correspondence.
