Rent may be fixed, but your monthly utility bills can creep up fast, especially during Detroit’s hot summers and cold winters. At Grant & Main, we want tenants to feel comfortable and in control.
Here are some easy, renter friendly tips to help you save on utilities each month:
Unplug What You Are Not Using
Even when turned off, electronics like TVs, coffee makers, and chargers draw small amounts of power. Over time, this adds up. Unplug devices when not in use or use a power strip to shut off multiple items at once. Grant & Main encourages smart energy habits in all of our rentals.
Use Curtains and Blinds Strategically
In summer, close blinds during the day to block heat. In winter, open them to let in sunlight and warmth. Thermal curtains can also help regulate temperature. These small adjustments can make a big difference in comfort and utility costs.
Our Detroit Property Management team often recommends this as a low cost way to balance indoor temps without overusing HVAC systems.
Switch to LED Light Bulbs
LEDs use up to 75 percent less energy than standard bulbs and last much longer. Many Grant & Main units already include energy efficient lighting, but if you upgrade any bulbs yourself, be sure to store the originals so you can swap them back at move out.
Adjust the Thermostat by a Few Degrees
Setting your thermostat just 2 to 4 degrees lower in winter or higher in summer can significantly reduce your bill. Consider a programmable thermostat if your unit allows it, or manually adjust when you are sleeping or away from home.
Use Water Wisely
Shorter showers, full laundry loads, and turning off the tap while brushing your teeth all help reduce your water bill.
Saving money on utilities is easier than you think. With a few small changes and the support of Grant & Main, you can live comfortably and keep costs down.
