What to Do Before You Move Out of Your Rental (So You Get That Deposit Back!)

Moving out? Whether you’re upgrading to a new space or relocating across town, it pays, literally, to leave your rental in great shape.

At Grant & Main, we want our residents to succeed, and part of that is making sure you understand the move-out process. A little preparation can go a long way when it comes to getting your full deposit back.

Here’s a simple, renter-friendly checklist from our Detroit property management team to help you leave on a high note:

Give Proper Notice

Always check your lease to see how much notice is required, usually 30 days. Grant & Main makes it easy with clear lease terms and simple instructions for submitting your intent to vacate.

Patch & Paint (the Right Way)

If you used removable hooks, posters, or wall-mounted shelves, make sure to remove them carefully. Use putty to fill small nail holes, and if you painted any walls, return them to the original color (unless you got prior approval).

Our Detroit property management team at Grant & Main appreciates a heads-up if you’re unsure what needs to be fixed, we’re happy to advise.

Deep Clean Everything

This is one of the most common reasons deposits are withheld. Clean the kitchen (especially the stove and fridge), wipe down cabinets, scrub the bathroom, vacuum thoroughly, and don’t forget windows, baseboards, and inside closets.

Repair Minor Damage

Fix anything you can, like replacing broken blinds or replacing a burnt-out lightbulb. The fewer repairs we have to make, the more likely you are to get your full deposit back.

Don’t Forget Utilities & Keys

Contact utility companies to end or transfer your services, and make sure to return all keys, fobs, or garage openers to the Grant & Main office.

If you leave behind personal items, we may need to charge for removal, so double-check every drawer and closet before leaving.

Moving out doesn’t have to be stressful. At Grant & Main, we work hard to make your rental experience smooth from move-in to move-out. And with a little prep, our Detroit property management team can help make sure your deposit finds its way back to your wallet.
